David Frank

Our November meeting will feature our own David Frank. The topic will be “How to Finish the Bottom.”

You have just spent several hours (or days) working on a fabulous piece of turned art, or maybe just a simple utilitarian piece for the kitchen, but you are not done until you have finished the bottom.  The challenge is holding your work for access to the bottom where you have initially held the wood on the lathe.

David Frank will demonstrate several design options for decorating the bottom and explore various methods for holding your work safely.  From simple bowls and boxes to natural edges and hollow forms there are multiple ways to accomplish this.  Learn about Kirsten cones; expansion, jam, and vacuum chucks; and Cole and Straka chucks. No more felt to cover the screw holes!

The morning will also include a show-and-tell, a wood raffle, and a brief club update, including officer elections for 2025.

There is no mask mandate in place, but everyone is welcome to wear one or not. We all have different health situations and respect each other’s mask-wearing preferences.

February 2024

Matt Monaco

Join us on February 24th from 9 to 4 for a live all-day demonstration with professional woodturner Matt Monaco.

Matt is a full-time professional turner with 20 years of experience. One of his missions is to make the highest quality products, that reflect both the mastery of the tools and the functionality and timeless beauty of wooden decor in others’ lives. Matt is one of a very few modern traditional woodturners having apprenticed and trained as a trade professional and worked closely within a high-end furniture production landscape — Shackleton Thomas Furniture and Pottery. At the center of Matt’s work is his understanding and mastery of tool control as an expression of traditionally crafted design as fine art — in producing forms and items that are as tactile as they are sublime and made with intent and purpose.

At our meeting, Matt will be turning a detailed platter. His emphasis will be on sharpening modifications and clean cuts using traditional tools to create surfaces cut straight off the tool. The major differences between scraping, cutting, and shearing will be demonstrated with methods that allow members and students to be engaged in learning the process of creating a fine, classic form, and also be useful for understanding effective ways to finish this style of item as a utility or display item to a fine food safe sheen.

September 2023

Trent Bosch

Trent Bosch has been woodturning professionally for more than 25 years, having started turning in the late 80s and early 90s. Exploring all types of woodturning, he was fascinated by the processes and what could be made on the lathe, specializing in one-of-a-kind sculptural woodturnings. While pursuing his ideas in turning he was always looking to make the process faster, more efficient, and better, modifying the tools he had to actually work the way he wanted them to. Along the way, he came up with ideas for completely different designs.  He has designed simple hollowing tools to the more complex Stabilizer and Visualizer. He enjoys demonstrating and helping other turners find the satisfaction and enjoyment that comes from the woodturning process.

Trent’s topic for this demo will be Vessels of Illusion. This demonstration will include turning the outer hollow form, carving the vessel, turning the insert, using wood bending to get the insert in the outer vessel, and principles of wood bending for woodturners.

Woodturning Artist Joanne Sauvageau

Join us Saturday, January 25th, for a half day demonstration featuring woodturning artist Joanne Sauvageau. Joanne is known for using different techniques to embellish her turnings. She will be demonstrating and sharing her embellishment techniques with us via live remote video demonstration.

From Joanne’s website: “I have always had an interest in creating art in its many mediums, but none have brought as much passion as woodturning. It continues to be a great escape. I lose all concept of time when I stand at my lathe with a wonderful piece of wood. Each piece of wood has it’s own unique character. The woodchips fly and reveal the hidden treasures within. I have worked with exotic woods but my favorite continues to be birch. It’s plain grain is a great canvas to incorporate carving and pyrography into my work! Turning provides an outlet for me to create both utilitarian objects and art. It has opened a whole new world of discovery into other mediums such as copper, leather and stone. But perhaps the most rewarding has been the opportunity to interact with other like-minded wood artists. I have never met a group of people so eager and willing to share their technique and craft!” Visit joannesauvageau.com to view Joanne’s gallery and learn more about her work.

Inside out bowl

Join us Saturday, November 23rd for a free half day demo featuring woodturner Kyle Carmona who will be demonstrating an inside out bowl.

Kyle has been turning and member of CIW since the summer of 2018. His first projects were segmented bowls. At the start of 2019 he saw a picture of a bowl that was made out of a single material but was stained red on the interior and wondered if he could achieve the same result using two different woods. He headed to his Excel spreadsheet and developed a simple model that said it could be done. He refined the building technique on some smaller bowls and then started making larger bowls further refining the building technique and his Excel spreadsheet. This summer he entered three of his two layer bowls into the Ventura County Fair and won first place with each bowl. Out of the wood turning division his Black Limba / Zebrawood bowl was Nominated for Best of Show.

November 2018

Join us for a half-day live demonstration by guest woodturner Lyle Jamieson

Lyle will be demonstrating live from his studio in Michigan over the Internet exclusively to CIW in our meeting room. This modern technique of demonstrating woodturning techniques over the Internet is a first for CIW. There will be time for Q&A and back-and-forth dialog between Lyle and those in attendance here in Ventura. The subject of the demo will be hollow form and bowl turning.

From Lyle’s website:

Many teachers have generously given me their tricks and techniques in all phases of turning, but I needed to know the “why”. Sometimes when asking “why” I got the answer, “Because that’s the way it’s been done.” That was not good enough and I set out to figure out the dynamics of turning. Once you understand why a technique works well or why catches happen, then you can open up a whole new avenue of creativity never tapped before. Get in control, remove the fear, let the creativity flow, and have more fun at the lathe. Students can take their abilities to new levels. Once you know the “why,” you have the option of turning what you want and not just copying the “how” others are using. My teaching is process oriented not project oriented.

Here’s a video of Lyle preparing a blank for turning:
