Steve Dunn Demonstration

At the February 28, 2004 meeting Steve Dunn from Gardena, CA presented an all-day session.  He demonstrated three separate projects using several techniques that were new to our club members.

Project I. Thin-stemmed goblets:

Steve ready to turn a goblet from Black Loqust

The shaped, sanded and finished cup of the goblet is supported by the tail stock

Beginning to turn stem, cutting down hill with the fibers

Final shaping of the thin stem is done with the edge of the bowl gouge in the skew position cutting toward the head stock

Partially parting off the base just prior to finishing the stem and base

The finished goblet

Project II.  Shallow bowl with aniline dye coloring:

A blank of Big Leaf Maple mounted between centers

The top of the bowl with the best figure is partially shaped and a tenon is cut so it can be reversed.

The bottom is shaped and a recess is cut to reverse the blank for finishing the top

Final sanding of the bottom to 600 grit prior to spraying with lacquer. This seals the wood pores and prevents bleed through of the analine dye from

Blue aniline dye has been applied to the final sanded outer rim of the top

The dyed surface is finished with spray lacquer to seal the dye and prevent bleeding when the rest of the bowl is finished

The shallow bowl center is shaped and the inside rim is slightly undercut to remove any dye bleed. The entire bowl then gets 4 coats of spray lacquer

Project III.  Square Bowl:

Bottom of Purple Heart square bowl with tennon left for turning top. Note the beading tool which has been ground as a 'ngeative rake' scraper

Underside of bowl fininshed except for tenon left for turning the top

Top of bowl begun - note thin uniform edge with step-wise progression toward center

Final shape of inside of bowl showing chatter marks from bowl gouge and vibration. These were removed with curved skew ground as negative rake scraper

Final shape of bowl top

Bottom of bowl with small foot refined in jam chuck. Center nubb will be removed by hand
