Newsletter September 2007 Vol. 12 No. 9
Meeting Information: Saturday, September 29th, 9 am to 1 pm
At Oxnard High School Woodshop
3400 Gonzales Road, Oxnard, CA
The school is East of Victoria Ave. and West of Ventura Road. Enter the school by turning South off of Gonzales Road into the main entry to the school. See Map with details to woodshop.
Note that due to insurance requirements only current AAW members may participate in using the lathes: everyone can watch and learn.
Note that our third Hands-On-Workshop for the year is on the 5th Saturday, one week later than our usual meeting day. As noted above in blue our agreement with the school and due to the AAW insurance policy that covers our activities only current members of the AAW will be allowed to use the lathes. We strongly suggest that all members of Channel Islands Woodturners join the AAW anyway for the many benefits including the excellent quarterly journal and the annual symposium. Non-AAW members are encouraged to attend and learn by watching. If you don't have a lathe and are just considering whether to pursue this hobby, we will link you up with one of our mentors and you can practice in their shop. Also see the mentor info on the officers page.
Remember to bring not only your safety gear but also wood to turn, sandpaper, superglue, your turning tools (sharpened) and any finishes that you might want to use. The meeting will end at 1 pm with the last 20 minutes committed to cleaning up the shop (if you turn you clean!) Also we will not be providing drinks, snacks or lunch so it is BYO.
Over 30 members and guests attended the August 25th meeting featuring the all day demonstration by Mike Jackofsky. The demo description by Chrystal and photos by Ron are on the Jackofsky Demo page. The natural edged open bowl and the hollow form that he made will be finished by club members and brought to the December Holiday Social.
President Bruce dazzled us with his ballerina outfit after recovery from knee surgery (Thanks Ron). And thanks to Bruce for returning to his presidential duties so quickly following surgery.
Save the date of October 27th for our next international woodturning demonstrator Jimmy Clewes from North East England who will be with us for an all-day demo. More information about reserving you spot will appear next month. In the meantime you can go to his webpage for information and gallery: Jimmy Clewes.
